Nico qualified as a medical doctor in 2008, after which he completed his internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) and community service at Tshwane District Hospital. He started specialization in Urology in 2013 and qualified at specialist Urologist in 2017. His interest has always been Paediatric Urology, specifically Hypospadiology and congenital Urological abnormalities. His dissertation for his master’s degree evaluated the surgical outcomes of Hypospadias repair at SBAH, showing that the complication rates were significantly higher compared to international centres where this condition is managed. It was during the preparation of this dissertation that he noticed the disproportionately high number of patients presenting with Disorders of Sex Differentiation (DSD) to SBAH the majority which consist of true Intersex/Ovotesticular DSD. Nico is currently enrolled for his PhD in Urology at the University of Pretoria, being done in collaboration with Aarhus University in Aarhus, Denmark. The primary focus will be the evaluation of genetic and epigenetic disruption occurring in paediatric patients with Ovotesticular DSD and the possible link with Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). The PhD is at the analysis phase and completion is expected by the end of December 2023.
Lastly, he will also be writing his European Society of Paediatric Urology board exams in the
